How Life On Gigs Are Made So Much Easier

Playing with DT8 again over the summer reminded me again how a gig can be so much easier with musicians who are not only good professional players who know their craft but are good people,

Thankfully the world is full of great music to love, listen to and enjoy playing. Performing music to a professional standard to pay for your mortgage, children's clothing, utilities and your baked beans can bring to the job a great deal of stress and anxiety that wouldn't exist if performing were a hobby or occasional past time.

Long heard sayings such as; 'you are only as good as your last gig' or 'never ever assume the gig is yours' still ring true. These add weight to the constant requirement to be 'on it' at the highest level and to deliver playing of professional standards under a whole range of different pressures from your own expectations on yourself, the waiting monthly bills, giving audiences the great time and the best value for their hard earned money, the fixers requirements, never ever wanting to let your colleagues down and even failing the music itself.

What makes a gig so much easier to achieve all this is the company you find yourself alongside. DT8 are probably, if not, the finest function band in the SW of the UK and beyond. As a constantly working 12 piece band they are uniquely rare in their size and the sound they bring with three singers, five brass and full rhythm section.

The charts are challenging. It is a difficult pad even on the second trumpet chair but what makes the gigs and rehearsals with DT8 so much easier and a real personal joy is the fine playing but also the company of really good people to spend time with. This is gold dust and reminded me every time across DT8's 2026 dates to do this for a living with such good people makes the baked beans taste even finer,.
