Five English Dances in recent years has become one of the most requested works on the catalogue and on hearing and playing it is clear to see why.

All five movements demonstrate beautiful, skilful and imaginative arranging. Opening with a folk tune not often heard today The Droll Lover the suite starts at an energetic pace. A beautifully sensitive and moving arrangement of Scarborough Fair follows before the third movement shifts mood into the classic When The Boat Comes (which came into the rooms of many through the TV series of the same name in the 1970’s) here successfully given a new ⅝ feel. Barabara Allen made famous through Joan Baez’s 1960 recording and again in 1989 with a release by Bob Dylan is a beautiful and moving prologue to the rip roaring fifth and final movement, a ‘hold on to your chairs’ ride through Early One Morning.
